What makes us human? Literature as a mirror reflecting who we are
Think about the power of stories as lifelines that connect and define us, shaping individual and collective identities: through storytelling, we make sense of our experiences, bridge differences, and forge meaningful connections with others. Literature, as a depository of stories across time and cultures, preserves these narratives, offering a profound insight into universal themes such as love, loss, resilience, and hope. By examining the role of literature and storytelling in human development, we aim to highlight how narratives enable us to navigate life’s complexities, foster empathy, and create a sense of belonging. Far more than mere entertainment, stories – whether oral, written, or preserved in literature – are and will always be essential threads in the fabric of what makes us human.

Wonder and knowledge: the dialogue between science and literature
Consider how our understanding of the world emerges through the constant interplay between scientific inquiry and literary imagination, two fundamental ways we make sense of human experience. Through this dialogue, we construct not just knowledge but meaning, shaping both how we see and what we’re capable of seeing. Our cultural gaze – that collective lens through which we observe and interpret reality – acts as both window and mirror, determining not only what questions we ask but how we frame the answers we find. Literature and science are essential threads in the fabric of human understanding. Each informs and transforms the other in an ongoing conversation that defines not just what we know, but who we are.
